For those of you moms that left the workforce to be stay at home moms when your kids were really young, when did you reenter the workforce? When you were looking for a job was it hard? Did you have to start at the bottom again? If so how long did it take you to get established into a position you were happy with. I feel like a lot of mothers entering the workforce are forced to start at the bottom because she’s they have a break in employment which is really a disgrace.

I was gone a year, and joined back with the company I had previously left at the same level that I had left.
I don't see why anyone would have to start below their previous level? Is there a particular field that that's an issue?
The Mommy Tax is absolutely real, but surely experience with a certain position will make you a good candidate for that position again unless it's in a field that really changes that fast.

@SomewhatOfALegend,
“And for women in more senior/executive level positions, you’re competing with incumbents who are being groomed by current leadership.”
This is on point.

I’ve started looking over the last month. Technically, I’ve been out of a formal salaried position since the start of the pandemic. I was making about $60k, had 4 weeks PTO, and 401k with 401k match. I have done contract work ever since on a full time and part time basis. I don’t technically have a gap on my resume and am still struggling to find anything that I’m qualified for based on the job description and application requirements that is salaried, pays more than $18 an hour, and/or offers more than a week of PTO. There are also a lot of disclaimers on job listings about certain jobs not being a good fit for people who travel for holidays because they require all employees to work the days before and after all major holidays. $35k would be our break even point for daycare but $55k is where we hit a point where me having a salary makes much of a difference to our financial situation. It really sucks because my mental health is in the toilet and me, my husband, and therapist all agree that the solution is to go back to work and it seems like it’s going to be hard to find something that makes financial sense.

I have been a stay at home mom for over five years. I stopped working as a kindergarten teacher in my pregnancy due to complications and needing to be in the hospital on bedrest and close monitoring.
I am debating if I should try to get back into the workforce now that my kids are in full time school.
I think biggest thing holding me back from entering the workforce is that it will be a period of change/adjustment for my family and I. Also, I know that jumping into a full time class teacher is a lot of work and less flexibility on my part. Thinking maybe to go back part time in some form , like a para educator or substitute teacher

I left the work force for a year with my first. I just started applying to listings and found a job 3 months later. The job market wasn’t as bad as it is now.

I started working again once my youngest started school. It was easy for me to reenter the workforce because I’m in education and it’s not super uncommon for people to take time off to be with their kids. I got the first job I interviewed for, but I’m aware that’s not as common in other fields. My husband is in a totally different field, though, and says he always likes to hire former SAHMs because he know how well they can multitask and get things done.

I’m a nurse and it doesn’t matter if you take two days off of twenty years off, you walk back into the same job. Hence why I picked nursing. I personally think it’s dumb for a woman to leave a field when they know it’ll evolve in the time they chose to take off, and then complain that they can’t get back in. I mean does no one think ahead and say “I will want to be a SAHM for a few years at least so I should choose a profession that will work with that.” I mean, do people not think??

@BlackJeans,
lol??? No one has time for this type of mom shaming mentality. A lot of mothers don’t know how they are going to feel after they have kids we are allowed to change our minds. I also would never recommend choosing a job based off this. You should do a job you’re passionate about not a job that allows you to reenter the workforce.
