the BALKING ATTACK with WAR BONDS VOLUME 47 MR. CHARLES S. LEE DIED LAST THURSDAY Mr. Charles Stephen Lee, prominent Elba citizen and member of one of Coffee's pioneer families, died last Thursday night at Gibson's hospital in Enterprise following several days illness. Mr.

Lee, who would have been eighty years of age on December 31, was born in Elba and had spent all his life in and near the city. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ida Lee; seven daughters: Mrs. O. A.

Ellis, Robertsdale, Mrs. J. G. Clark, Elba, Mrs. Arthur Joe Grant, Montgomery, Mrs.

John 'Sanders, Dothan, Mrs. Rena Sikes, Montgomery, Mrs. Hobbie Helms, Brundidge, and Mrs. J. A.

Carnley, Elba; four sons, Clarence Lee, Enterprise, Willie Ben Lee, Mobile, Charlie Pete Lee, Montgomry, and Stephen D. Lee, Miami; two sisters, Mrs. Mamie Ham, Elba, and Mrs. Annie King, Andalusia; a brother, Eddie B. Lee, Elba; 20 grand children and seven great grand children.

Funeral services were held at the Elba Baptist Church Saturday afternoon with Rev. O. M. Fox and Minister J. C.

Dixon officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen cemetery. Active pallbearers were the following grand sons: Charlie Ben Ellis, Alpheus Lee Ellis, Edwin Ellis, Warren Ellis, William Ellis, Robert Ellis, Charles Clark and Jerry Hause. Hayes Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Mrs.

T. E. Farmer and children, who have been spending several months in Elba left Tuesday for Avon Park, to join Mr. Farmer. Friends of Rev.

and Mrs. C. P. Roberts will be glad to learn that they are improving after several days illness of flu. COUNTY FHA HOLDS MEET IN ENTERPRISE On Thursday afternoon, December 16, the officers and advisor of the Enterprise Chapter of Future Homemakers of Alabama, entertained the Elba, New Brockton and Kinston Chapter's officers and the County Council's officers.

The president, Dorothy Pittman, presided over the short business session. Sara Frances Hataway read the minutes of the last meeting. An enjoyable musical program was rendered. Dainty refreshments were served. The next meeting will be held in Kinston in Februay.

Jeanne Moore, Reporter. MR. MATHIS DIES THE Friends of Mr. Gordon Mathis, of Elba, deeply sympathize with him in the loss of his father, Mr. P.

G. Mathis, which occurred at his in Andalusia early Sunday morning. Mr. Mathis, 276 years of age formerly resided here and had many friends in the county. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in Andalusia.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary A. Mathis, of Andalusia; one son, Gordon Mathis, Elba; three daughters, Mrs. Charles Brunson, Andalusia, Mrs. Robert H.

Williams and Mrs. Nita Mathis Brewer, both of Montgomery. Mrs. Sam King has received word that two of her brothers, William and Buck Taylor, of Winter Garden, are back in the United States. They have served in the Navy two and one-half years each.

They have been in North Africa. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Hanchey and family, of Columbus, Ga. spent the Christmas holidays with Mr.

and Mrs. Emmett Hanchey and other relatives in Elba. NOTICE! Mrs. W. C. Braswell, club president, presided over a short business meeting. After the business session, Miss Mabel Brunson, program chairman, led an interesting program, the subject being Christmas music.

B. degree from Judson College, Marion, in May, and Miss Nell English, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. L.

English, who will receive her B. S. degree from George Peabody College, Nashville, in June are among those students who will be listed in the 1943-44 Issue of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. The book will be released in April. This book is published through the cooperation of over 600 American universities and colleges.

It is the only means of national recognition for graduates which is devoid of politics, fees, and dues. Several students from accredited colleges are selected each year by an unprejudiced committee for their biographies to appear in "Who's Who Among students In American Colleges and Universities." These books are placed in the hands of hundreds of companies wso annually recruit outstanding students for employment. The purpose of "Who's Who" is to serve as an incentive for students to get the most out of their college careers; as a means of compensation to students for what they have already done; as a recommendation to the business world; and as a standard of measurement for students. Miss Brunson is editor of her college newspaper, member of the Jane Jewett Honor Society, accompanist of the college glee club, member of the college choir, was president of the E. L.

Powers Music Club, was accompanist for the string orchestra, and has been an honor student throughout her college career. Miss Brunson is majoring in piano and French. She attended Elba High School where she was a member of the national Beta Club. Miss English is a member of the Pi Gamma Mu honorary fraternity. And at David Lipscomb College, she was president and accompanist for the Girl's Glee Club, a member of the Music Club French Club, and Alabama Club.

Here she was also a scholarship student. Miss English graduated from Elba High School in the class 1940 and during her high school career was a member of the national Beta Club. GO TO CHURCH SUNDAY! MRS. LINDSEY DIED AT HOME THURSDAY NITE Mrs. Teate Lindsey, one of Elba's most highly esteemed residents, died at her home here last Thursday evening, following a long illness of heart trouble.

Countless friends were deeply grieved at news of her passing. She was 73 years of age and was born and reared in Coffee. She was the widow of the late Jesse Lindsey. Surviving are one son, Jordan Lindsey, of Elba; five brothers, Messers Mal, Bolden, General, Dock and Tom Cauley; four sisters, Mrs. Annie Prescott, Mrs.

Dave Foley, Mrs. Vie Taylor, Mrs. Sweet Benton. Funeral services were conducted by Elder Morrow at Bethany Primitive Baptist Church Sunday afternoon, with burial in the cemetery at Danley's Cross Roads. Active pallbearers were: Joe Frank Prescott, Alfred Seymore, Jim Whitman, Bob Borders, Tig Hawkins and George Conaway.

ELBA FFA AND FHA HAVE JOINT SOCIAL The Elba Chapters of FFA and FHA met jointly at the Vocational Building Thursday evening, December 16, for an evening of merriment. The group sang Christmas carols and a number of games were played. Everyone enjoyed roasting weiners around the fire back of the building. The groups reassembled around the large and beautiful Christmas tree where presents were given to each member present.

FHA Reporter. MRS. REBECCA SMART DIED LAST WEDNESDAY Mrs. Hanna Anna Rebecca age 88, well known and highly esteemed resident of Zion Chapel community, died at her home on December 23, 1943. Old age is ascribed as the cause of her death.

Her passing brought sorrow to many relatives and friends. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lella Bryan and Mrs. Ida Hysmith; six sons, Messers Charlie, Jule, Joe, Josh, Jeet and Jim Smart, and many other relatives. Funeral services were conducted by Rev.

O. M. Fox at Zion Chapel on December 24. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery. Hayes Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

GRIMES- -PRICE Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Grimes announce the marriage of their daughter, Lucy, to Cpl.

Fred Price. The wedding took place in the early evening, December 24, at the home of the bride's parents with Minister J. C. Dixon officiating, in the presence of the families, relatives and close friends. Both the bride and groom received their high school education in Elba.

The bride later attended Troy State Teachers College and now has a position. in the Kinston High School. The groom at present has Army assignment in California. Mr. and Mrs.

Forrest Brunson have returned to their home in Birmingham after spending the Christmas holidays with Mrs. E. D. Wooten and other Elba relatives. Lieut.

and Mrs. Merritt Pope, of Panama City, were guests of Mrs. J. J. Farris last Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Eris F. Paul and little daughter, of Atlanta, have been spending the holidays with Mr. and Mrs.

W. B. Paul and family. Mr. and Mrs.

F. H. Rainer and children, Young Wood and Martha, of Mobile, visited Mrs. J. J.

Farris and other Elba relatives the first of the week. PATIENTS IN RUCKER HOSPITAL GIVEN PARTY Nine hundred soldiers, patients in the station hospital at Camp Rucker, were given a Christmas party through the sponsorship of the Red Cross. Schools and individuals throughout Coffee and other surrounding counties had contributed the confections which filled each man's red tarlatan Christmas stocking and a wrapped gift for the trees for each one of the patients. Students from the schools had gone to the hospital days in advance to wrap the gifts and make ready for the party. A program for their entertainment was provided by Ozark Glee Club and other including a group of professionals.

NICE CHRISTMAS FOR COLORED SCHOOL Patrons and pupils of the Rocky Head colored school enjoyed a nice Christmas tree party Tuesday night of last week when Mrs. J. T. Williams furnished candy, fruit and presents for the school pupils. They all wish to thank Mrs.

Williams for her gifts. Gladys Lane Rhodes is teacher of the school. Wm. G. Johnson, of Bradley Field, has returned to his post after spending the holidays with his wife and little son in the home of Mr.

Felix H. Chapman announce the birth of a son, on December 17 at the University hospital, Oklahoma City, whom they have named James Andrew. Mr. Chapman is the son of Mrs. A.

M. Chapman, Troy, Rt. 2, and is now employed with the Douglas Aircraft in Oklahoma City. Mr. and Mrs.

George Saxon and children, Betty George and Jimmy, of Birmingham, have returned to their home after visiting relatives in Elba for the Holidays. Miss Elizabeth Rowe, of Montgomery, and 'Mr. and Mrs. Milton O'Neal and son, Milton, of Andalusia, were guests of Mr. and Mrs.

J. M. Rowe and Miss Zadie Rowe during the holidays. NEW HOPE SINCEREST WISHES Paul Revere was born on New Year's Day, 1735. We hail that day! And just as he returned to his goldsmith's work, long after his historic ride, so will we return to the normal occupations of the ways of peace.
